Poetry on Demand

One thing I have my students do each year is to write a poem from a random group of words. The first time around, each pair of students pulls a list of four words from a cup and work together to create a poem using those words. Afterwards, I let each student choose the words they want to work with. I'm always a little in awe of some of the poems my students create. Like this one....

I lay on the grass
until sunset

in the moonlit sky
I felt God's presence

at that moment
I think He blessed me

and this one....

All alone
on the rainy midnight trail
a traveler moved along
his horse was spooked
by sounds of the wild
he tried to grip the horse's mane
but slipped

Off into the night the stallion ran
his body bruised
his muslces sore
the traveler crawled to a nearby bank
and lay on the cold, wet ground
dying
Now just a spirit in the wind
but some say
on a cold, rainy night
a lot like that night
you might
you just might
hear him crying out in pain

Aren't they great? And these are their first drafts... completed in less than one class period. Poetry on demand so-to-speak.

Great...that is a understatement Roban. Your students sure are a talented lot.
As for first drafts, I don't think they should change a word!

We never did anything this creative and fun when I was at school....at least I don't think we did.....I might not have been paying attention! My report card often stated "Peggy could do better if she concentrated more"!

I am making up for it now in my twilight years....poetry is my favourite subject now.

Cheers
Peggy

I love these. Now that state testing is soon to be over, we get to do the fun stuff - poetry and art! I am so excited. Our favorite kind are the personification poems. They get really good at those. Thanks for sharing.

wonderful works ... I have a file in my poetry file named POD .. It stands for Poetry on Demand as well .. I have had several over the years call and say, "I need a poem for ...." sometimes it works .. sometimes it doesn't

These are good ..

You can be so thankful I am not a student of yours:). In theory I could have told you about all the different sorts of poetry and all the technical bits and pieces involved but to write the stuff, well, it was not a strong point. Glad you have students that aren't at all like me:)

Do you ever give them a set of nonsensical/made up words to work with Lewis Carrol style? I'd love to hear what they can do with a bunch of words where they can make up their own meanings!

It was my word verification 'fulping' that made me think of that, it sounds very LCish. Probably something a jaberwock would do;)

These poems are phenomenal! Poetry is such a personal/emotional art form that tweens/teens can really get introspective.

I hope the kids got a lot out of the activity.

Enjoy the last weeks of school, although, summer passes all too quickly. ;)
